Dear saints and family,

              Each year when our team goes to Ecuador, people often ask "Why go all the way to Ecuador, when you could do just as much good here in Kentucky?" It is a good question, but it misses the point that all of this is about the call of God. Our path has been paved by the will of our Saviour, Jesus Christ. The things that happen each year in Imbaburra province, we believe, are the result of God creating and directing His will through our lives for the people who live in that place.

         I received an email today from Kevin and Kathy Bruce, missionaries to the Awa. Each year we spend two or three days with them in the village of Rio Verde, providing some primary health care for the 300 or so people who walk up to the school there. Kevin writes that one of the members of the church there - a man by the name of Meregildo - gave thanks this past Sunday for the medical treatment that two of his daughters had received at our clinic. Both of them had severe cases of impetigo with boils. Mercifully, their illness resolved quickly (in two days, he said) after receiving injections and oral antibiotics. The girls had been crying in pain for quite some time, and they were all now very thankful. Kevin went on to say that they had heard similar things from many other of the Awa, some of whom attend church there, and some who do not. He also noted that we are helping them with the job of shining God's light there among the Awa.

        At the end of our trip, our coordinator Shelia Duncan had a conversation with the director of Liebenzell Missions, Edgar Luce. Liebenzell is the evangelical church with whom our teams work in Ecuador. Ed told Shelia that our teams are very useful to their efforts in the role of a "door opener". Whereas villages sometimes are reluctant to welcome a missionary, they nearly always are open to a health care team coming to their community. As they then become acquainted with the missionary, the village then welcomes them as well. And so shines the light.

        One year ago this month David Ravenhill shared with our church a message about the purpose of God. In Genesis 12:3, God tells Abram that "in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed". Later, in Isaiah 49:6, He says "I will make you as a light for the nations, that my salvation may reach to the end of the earth." That is happening before our very eyes, church! Things are changing in Ecuador. The Awa and Quechua people alike have become mature believers, and they too "shine as lights in the world". God is working there, and He is working here. Rejoice!

Dear family,

Today is our last day in Ecuador. Our team of eight worshipped with out friends at Iglesias Bautista Galilea. We had worked alongside several of their members over the previous ten days. Pastor Wilman Varela, wife Clemencia and family have become our close friends. The church made a presentation to our team, giving thanks for our willingness to serve, and for God's grace, love and sufficiency. It was a day of celebration. I was reminded of how much God has blessed the bride of Jesus, and how the body of Christ stretches around the Earth.

The team is staying tonight at the HCJB guest house. We will fly out early in the morning, flying to Miami then to Cincinnati. Will be home by late afternoon. I am looking forward to seeing each of you again.

Rio Verde

Dear family and friends,

Our team this year had nine members - me, Shelia (our leader), Phil (Shelia's spouse and translator), Leah (the Duncan's daughter and a nurse who coordinated the pharmacy), Corey (19 yr.old student, Leah's helper), Bill Harrell (pediatrician), Jan (peds nurse), Janet (home health nurse who saw patients), and Alvaro (a mental health worker in the public schools of Columbia who translated for Janet). We had a great and experienced team.

One act of God's providence occurred last Sunday on the way to Lita. A dump truck was sitting in the opposite lane as our bus was coming around a curve. A bus coming from the opposite direction passed by the truck, leaving our bus but a few extra inches on our side of the road. Many prayers of the moment went up in those few seconds, and the two buses passed safely by one another.

The first day in clinic at Rio Verde was a day of much activity and clinical diversity. I treated an asthmatic women with a nebulizer, a lady with pneumonia with an antibiotic injection, and a family of three children with bad cases of impetigo. One lady had a large ganglion cyst which required aspiration. We saw Gloria once again. She has had scleroderma for several years, and we bring her annual supply of medication. She is doing well. We met her daughter, who is on a national soccer team for Ecuador. One man we examined had been acutely confused for four days. His diagnosis eluded us, and we recommended cautious observation and hospital treatment if not improving.

One very interesting family was a couple in their late fifties or early sixties. They had two children - a son who is ten and a daughter who is four - both of whom had Down's syndrome. It was difficult for us to know how difficult a task these parents had in raising these children. Nevertheless, they were very kind and loving. Shelia hugged the little girl, who took a particular liking to Shelia's nose. She kept pulling on it until it became quite red. Then, when I had my back turned during my exam of the boy, he caught me off guard when he tweaked by backside. I jumped about two feet, and all six of us laughed!

It was a great two days at Rio Verde. God is surely bringing His kingdom to this remote corner of the world.

Wilson

"When He got out of the boat, immediately a man from the tombs with an unclean spirit met Him....Constantly, night and day, he was screaming among the tombs and in the mountains, and gashing himself with stones." Mark 5:2,5

          His name was Wilson. His mother had brought him to the school at Pijal to be seen by us. Four years prior he had gone out with friends in his normal state of mind, but upon returning home that evening his mind was seemingly vacant, according to his mother.  Since that day, he would wander aimlessly each day, spending many nights without sleep. His responses to questions were minimal, and he seemed to stare constanly into the distance, moving his hands without purpose about his head and face. He denied seeing things that were unreal, and denied hearing voices. His mother had taken him to several physicians as well as to a psychiatrist in Quito.He was on several psychiatric medications, but was no better -- perhaps worse. The mother begged that we help her son.

         After spending some time with this year man, Shelia Duncan and I wondered if there was a spiritual context to this young man´s plight. Although he definitely seemed very depressed, he was able to give appropriate, albeit brief, replies to our questions. He did not appear to be psychotic. As we were talking with him, pastor Wilman stood alongside listening. As it turned out, he knew the young man´s family. Led by the Holy Spirit, he began speaking with Wilson directly, face to face. He asked out sin, and this seemed to hit the target. He began to share the Gospel with Wilson, and shared about the love of Christ, His sacrifice, and His offer of new life. Wilson was slow in his response initially, but by the power of the Spirit, he slowly began to experience the tearing down of a stronghold. By God´s grace, he professed Jesus Christ as Saviour! Wilman embraced Wilson as the tears began to flow. My thoughts turned to the passage about the prisoners being set free.

         Wilson is not yet emotionally free, however. We did reduce his psychiatric medication regimen, and encouraged a followup with his psychiatrist. We also strongly recommended beginning reading the Word, and to pray, and to attach himself to a local body of believers. Wilman was going to assist him in this. We prayed. Once again, everyone in the clinic was graced by the strong presence of the Holy Spirit.

¨Then He said to the man, ´Stretch our your hand!´ He stretched it out, and it was restored to normal, like the other.¨ Matthew 12:13

     The drive up to Rio Verde on this past Monday morning was glorious, as usual. We were blessed with a relatively dry road, and the chill of the air in the back of the pickup was refreshing. The Rio Verde was running with plenty of water, and the new bridge looked great. When we arrived at the Rio Verde school, a good-sized crowd of Awa were awaiting us. The team was glad to see our missionary friends Kevin and Kathy Bruce as well as well as Andy and Chrissy Schwab once again. Kevin had informed me the night before that their partners with the Awa mission these past sixteen years -- Doug and Dorcas Williams -- had made the difficult decision to begin their transition back to the US for the sake of their children. This will change life signicantly for the Bruces and the Schwabs.

     As we quickly set up the clinic in the school building, Kevin announced that a family was bringing their ten year old son to be seen. While working the day before, he had sustained a significant laceration to three fingers of his right hand. They hoped that we could repair the hand without causing much pain. As I examined his hand, I could see that he may have lacerated the extensor tendon of his index finger. In addition, he was none too happy to be at the clinic. Nonetheless, his parents insisted, and so we got started. I gave him two meds to sedate him, and an hour later he was able to rest on the table while we began irrigating his wounds with sterile saline. He tolerated the local anesthetic quite well. His grandparents - who just happened to be to the next patients to be seen by me -- sat alongside the patient as I began the repair of his hand. His third and fourth finger lacerations were only skin deep, and were easily repaired. The index finger laceration , however, was much deeper, but with the help of the Holy Spirit and good light, the tissue came together nicely and I believe the tendon was intact. After further irrigation, the skin was closed and his hand bandaged.   His parents and grandparents were pleased, and the boy was glad to be asleep!

      Later that day, Phillip Duncan (a member of our team) commented on how fortunate it was that the boy sustained his injury just the day before we were to arrive. Indeed, the team´s witness of God´s love and concern was magnified by this opportunity to provide needed care. Wilman (the Ecuadorian pastor and friend whose church assisted us this year) prayed with the boy and his family, completing a time in which we felt the presence of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.

Return from Rio Verde

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

          Peace and grace to each of you from God the Father and Jesus our Lord. I am here in Otavalo this afternoon, having returned from a day´s work at the beautiful community of Inguinchu atop the Andes in Imbaburra Province. The scenery there is spectacular, but the temperature was most cold all day. We had a good day in clinic, seeing about 100 Quechua people. We had exciting rides in the back of the pickup truck both to and from the site. All team members are healthy and happy.

        Our four days in Lita and Rio Verde were filled with wonder and glory. Our friends from the Galilea Church here in Otavalo sent a team along with us to Lita to lead the VBS that took place for the children of Lita, conducted at the same time as the health clinics that we held for the Awa at Rio Verde. It was great working alongside them, and in sharing meals with them. We value the long-term friendships that have developed between us over the years.

       There are several stories that came out of our time there, and it will take more than this email to tell them. But I will share one story with you now. His name is Luis. Luis is a 20 year old Awa male who has a seizure disorder. Two months before we arrived, he had a bad seizure at home, and fell into the fire his parents were using to cook a meal. He sustained 2nd and 3rd degree burns of his right elbow. His family did the best they could do to take good care of his injury, but by the time I saw him his right arm was infected and badly contracted by scarring of the skin around his elbow. His parents were with him, and seemed very kind. Luis, naturally, was very apprehensive about being around people he had never met before. We spent time in listening to their story, and in soothing Luis. At last, he agreed to lie down on our make-shift exam bed. His elbow was swollen, and very sensitive to touch. Gently, we debrided and dressed his wound, and gave instructions about subsequent wound care, providing the necessary materials to his family.   We also asked Wilman (our good friend and the pastor at Galilee) to pray with the family over Luis. There were no flashes of lightning, nor miraculous healing, but everyone there seem to sense the peace and love of God. I do know that Luis was calmer as a result. Please pray for Luis that his arm will become functional and without pain.

     The team returned to Otavalo last night, and as usual had a great time in reviewing what God is doing here in Ecuador. I am doing well, and my left knee is nearly back to normal. I have nearly run out of jokes to tell, as well! Seriously, we have taken note of the many things that God has done here over the years. Many people have found temporary help for illness. Many friendships have been formed. Several churches have been started. And many seeds have been planted. We concluded that we really have little idea of all that God has done.

      I will plan on writing again tomorrow evening, and tell more stories from Rio Verde at that time.

Lita Bound

Dear brothers and sisters:

Peace and grace be to you. Our team is preparing to journey to Lita, in the land of the Awa. We eagerly anticipate this each year, and so we do now. We will be out of touch with the world (including you) for the most part through Wednesday. The trip from here to there is beautiful, and look forward to a peaceful busride. We had a restful day yesterday, and had a wonderful time of worship at Galilea Baptist church this morning here in Otavalo. I also enjoyed a short ride by horseback at the hotel, but unfortunately missed my dismount and strained my left knee. I am hopeful that the knee will heal quickly. Our team has been talking about the necessity of depending on God moment by moment as we walk through these days. We pray that his power would be manifest both for the healing of those to whom we ministry and for His glory. Pray for the missionaries that we will be working alongside (the Bruces and the Schaubs). We have a good team (older and more male than usual). We look forward to seeing what God has in store for us over these next three and a half days.

Dear Ones in Christ Jesus our Lord,

        It is Saturday morning in Otavalo. Our team continues to experience good things from our Father. Yesterday, we spent the day in service of the people of a rural village near Otavalo called Gualsaqui. Linda and I worked there two years ago. The pastor there - Roberto - is a wonderful man of God. As we arrived to set up for the first day of clinic, he asked if we could pay a visit to one of the members of his church (the Church of the Nazarene at Gualsaqui) at her home. Shelia Duncan, nurse Jan and myself said "of course" and pastor Roberto took us there. We were graciously invited into the Quechua home, and stepped back 150 years in time. The construction was adobe, and within was one large room. An open fire was blazing in the center with a large kettle of potatoes aboil. An elderly woman was lying on the single cot to one side, with her husband alongside, and their daughter attending to meal preparation. About twenty guinea pigs (a local delicacy) were gathered along the edges of the room. There was one electric light, and by this we spent time with our patient. She was 84 years of age, and had suffered a stroke four months prior. She spoke Quechua only, so Roberto translated to Spanish so that Shelia could translate to English. She was to move neither her left arm nor her left leg. Because she spent all of her time in bed, she had developed contractures at her fingers as well as at her knee. Moreover, she lamented that she no longer had a purpose in life, and that she wished she could die. We learned however that she is a believer. After providing recommendations for daily rehabilitation exercises, as well as sitting an hour in the sunshine and taking an aspirin a day, we tried to encourage her with the truth. Roberto told her that her Father in heaven valued her not for what she does, but for who she is in Jesus Christ. This seemed to give her some hope. We finished by praying with her. I believe that her husband and daughter were encouraged as well.

        We subsequently returned to the 21st century, and conducted the clinic at the church. Bill Harrell - our pediatrician - had a great day working with many children and mothers. Jan and Janet - our two senior nurses - worked with many people, while translation was provided by one of our friends here, Katie from Oregon. Shelia and I worked with many adults, one of whom had stomach cancer. We prayed with him, and hugged him. We gave out about one trunkful of medications. We finished at about sundown, and the weary team dined at a restaurant in Otavalo. I had some delicious sea bass.

       Today, the team is resting and shopping. From time to time we encounter old friends on the streets here. Each night, we are engaging in our usual daily devotional. This year we are focusing on "Following Him", with daily emphasis on separate steps in that process. I shared last night about the value of "staying", with references to God´s word to Isaac in Genesis 26 and Jesus´s word to the disciples in Luke 24. If we are to receive what God has promised to us, we must wait for His directions. Power has been requested for this year´s mission effort. We (and certainly I) must wait upon Him.   My dear wife Linda has been encouraging me with daily notes that she packed in my travel bags. She includes a verse for each day. Yesterday´s verse was Psalm 27:14. It was ideally suited to the lessons of the day, for which I am thankful. This morning I read 2 Corinthians 9:8, which challenged me as well.

Saints of Tatesbrook and dear family,

            Greetings from Quito! Despite circumstances to the contrary, our team of eight missionaries arrived safely in Ecuador at 11:30 EDST last night. We are healthy and now this morning well fed and rested. We did have one or two delays, and a fairly bumpy ride, but overall a smooth trip. We stayed overnight at the beautiful HCJB Guest House here in Quito. It is operated by the HCJB Ministries, known these past decades for its worldwide broadcasts from atop the Andes here in Ecuador. Our team has just finished a great breakfast (complete with guananabi juice, LInda), and is now preparing to take a tour of the HCJB facilities, including the hospital. We are excited to hear about the history of God's grace and work in this place.

           Speaking of which, God did provide me with the opportunity enroute from Chicago to Miami to sit beside a lady from Jamaica. Her name is Sandra. Sandra was extremely anxious about the prospect of airflight. She had not flown since coming to Chicago thirty years before. She had decided on the spur of the moment to return to Jamaica to see family. She was concerned about storms in the area as well. As she sat, she was trembling, had difficulty staying in her seat, and was suffering from a bad cold. At one point she expressed doubt about being able to comlete the flight (!). She would hum songs to herself in an effort to calm herself. So, we subsequently engaged in a two hour conversation about her life, and about life in general. Suffice it to say that she had tried hard to enjoy life, but did not have peace. She apparently had attended church as a child, but said that she had not returned for many years. As the plane began its descent into Miami airspace she became yet more anxious. As I held her purse, I also held her hand, and we prayed. She did express a desire to know God better, and I believe that she experienced some of His peace during descent. Please pray for Sandra as well.

Dear Children of God,

Our group of five (Shelia, Dr.Bill, Jan, Tim and Janet) departed smoothly from N.Ky this am. We are presently in Chicago, and will fly to Miami in an hour. We will finally arrive in Quito at about 11PM, where we will be joined by the trinity (Phillip, Leah and Corey). God has blessed us with good health and safety thus far.

As your bedtime approached tonight, please pray that our team and supplies procede smoothly thru customs and security.

We will be spending the night at the HCJB guest house at the hospital in Quito (a treat).

Dear Ones in Christ,

            Our team will depart for Ecuador from Cincinnati at 11AM this Wednesday. As we arrive at the airport in Quito at about 10PM that night, please be in prayer that we will arrive safely, and in the power of the Holy Spirit. In particular, please pray that all of our team and all of our supplies will procede smoothly and completely through the customs and security processes there. Pray that we will hear and obey the Spirit as we procede, and that our witness to the people there will bring honor to God. Pray that we may remain healthy throughout the trip, and that each team member will abide in Jesus and that we will each walk in the Spirit. Pray for enlightenment and encouragement for the pastors, the missionaries, and their families. Pray that their needs will be met, and that their work will be empowered by God, for His glory. Pray that the people will know salvation and freedom through the healing power of our Lord Jesus Christ. Pray for power.

           Thanks for who you are and for what you do. You are important to us.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:

              Just as the elders of the church at Ephesus did for Paul prior to setting sail
on his third missionary journey, so you have done for me at the Church at Tatesbrook
earlier today. Thank you for your sincere prayers and kind wishes. I will endeavor to
write as often as I am able, keeping you aprised of what God is doing in Ecuador. As
Mike said today, each of you are a part of the story that unfolds there. My life is in part
composed of the prayers and experiences that we have shared together. And so God
uses all of that for His Glory.

          During his time with us last summer, David Ravenhill noted that King David
"...had served the purpose of God in his own genration" (Acts 13:36). May it be so
for us!

In this lower picture, you can see the screen that some members of our praise team enjoyed hiding behind as they played guitar and sang.

Sorry for all the people distracting you from the color of the back wall. Please ignore the children as they pretend to be singing sheep. There was an adult that was a strong influence in this kind of behavior. She hasn't changed.

Children's Christmas Musical

Just want to share that we had a great practice tonight as we get ready for the Children's Christmas Musical!

Photo of first practice show the children that have already got a head start.

We will have practice every Wednesday from now until Dec 5th, except Thanksgiving week, from 6:30-7:30pm and Saturday Dec. 4th from 9-11am.

We need as many kids as possible. Parents and grandparents, please encourage your kids to come and bring a friend. I promise you won't regret it once you see the performance on the 5th!

Reason #1: He loves Jesus

Initially, this appears cliche and "spiritual". Yet, for those who know Mike, this simple acknowledgement most accurately sums up why we have such a deep love for our pastor. Above all qualities and virtues that Mike may possess, his love for our Lord stands above them all. Whereas his love for his family, friends, and church body is great, his love for our Jesus is greater.

If ever there was a verse that so befittingly described Mike, it is John 15:5 "I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me and I in him bears much fruit...."

The fruit that God's bears through his servant Mike is unquestionable. He's tender to those who are hurting, firm to the prideful, inclusive to the rejected, edifying to the downcast, honest to the disillusioned, steadfast in his convictions, and unapologetic to those offended by the name of Jesus. Mike's abiding relationship with Jesus bears abundant fruit in his marriage, family, occupation, friends, and the church he's been entrusted to pastor.

So we thank you Mike. We thank you for putting God before us. We thank you for your unwavering love for Jesus Christ.

Finally, we thank you for being our pastor. We appreciate you so very much and are immeasurably blessed to have you in our lives.

Reason #2: His eagerness to cause mischief!

As a curious, courageous and fearless child of the king, Mike Brady gets into the middle of trouble at times.

Mike is creative about how he goes about mischief, but it is often with a purpose. Observing Mike with some of his pastor friends is a wonder to behold. It is tough to determine if they are picking on people or probing them.

At a moments notice, they will turn their playful banter into an opportunity to share the gospel with a stranger. Most people know that mischief is fun, but leave it to Mike to use it as a tool to break the ice and establish a common understanding to enhance communication in just about any relationship.

Life is all about change and you experience more of it with Mike.

Reason #3: Hearty "Hey Boy!"

If you have ever called Mike on his cell phone, or had Mike call you on his cell phone, or have been praying with Mike when someone calls Mike on his cell phone, you know that Mike loves to greet you with a hearty "Hey Boy!".

He takes his phone and his relationships seriously. If you call him, he will drop everything he is doing and focus on you.

He is a constant source of encouragement when he is always happy to see you or hear from you.

For those accustomed to prayer without interruptions, you might think that Mike is breaking some kind of religious protocol when he bolts noisily out of prayer ( a conversation with the Father ) in order to belt "Hey Boy!" to a mere mortal. After it has occurred a few times, and you process the temporal versus eternal qualities of the two conversations, you start to understand, appreciate and support our beloved pastor in his continuous pursuit of the next conversation.

Reason #4: He's less than six degrees of separation from any stranger

If you have ever traveled with our pastor, you know that no matter what state you are in, you will bump into someone that knows Mike Brady.

While traveling to any conference or retreat, you know that if you see a person with a Kentucky shirt, Mike can usually ask that person where he is from and have that "stranger" knowing someone who knows someone that was his best friend or relative in less than 5 minutes.

Kevin Bacon has got nothing on Mike Brady.

Mike Brady has truly never met a stranger because of this uncanny ability for him to remember someone that is related to some piece of everyone. This again, is a gift of God, because he seems to keep losing his keys, his wallet, his clicker and his glasses in any given sermon.

As much as Mike emphasizes relationships at Tatesbrook, it is hard to describe how significant of an impact that relationships have had on the pastor we love.

Reason #5: Like our savior, they call him "Teacher"

Our church is blessed with many teachers. As each of us seeks to be like-minded with Christ, we should consider one another more highly than ourselves and teach each other. What better compliment to our pastor than to be called "Teacher".

Jesus Christ may not have been a teacher by profession, but they called Him Rabbi because he did it so well and he never turned a child away.

Mike may not be a patient person by nature but it takes patience to be a teacher. It takes extreme patience to be a middle school teacher, and that is where God has placed him to confound us and those around him.

Mike has always been more of a teacher than a preacher, and that is only one of the reasons we appreciate him. Not that there is anything wrong with preaching..

Reason #6: At all times, he radiates the love of Christ.

You can just see it on his face. His emotions, his heart, his beliefs and values are all worn on his sleeves. He hides nothing, his life is an open book. Publicly on display for all to see. All the time.

As one member said, "He remains sooo calm when UK whips Louisville".

There are many things in this world that can get people excited and Mike enjoys many of them. The fact that he doesn't get shaken by the results of any game no matter who is playing is a good reason to love our pastor.

Personally, I love it when when people try to shake the unshakable.. the love of Christ.

An unshakable foundation is something to build on for the top five reasons still to come.

Reason #7: He married Lisa

Lisa Dorris married Mike Brady, and raised a beautiful family that was willing to sacrifice a wonderful life to move to Lexington when her husband was called.

This sacrifice represented a very special quality that we love about our pastor.

"He never tries to put himself above the rest of us"

Many times, it has been said that behind every great man, there is a great woman. In Mike's case, that great woman had the help of three great daughters in the forming of the pastor we love.

Reason #8: He has never ceased being a Student

Most pastors pursue a degree from a religious organization of some kind when they are called to the ministry. That is a very sound and reasonable path for some, but not our curious and creative pastor.

At first glance, you might think Mike Brady is a very simple man from a rural part of the country because of his Western Kentucky slang and twang. As you get to know him, you learn that his depth of knowledge and understanding comes from his desire to be a student that learns from a master.

When Mike looks to study history, he looks to a professor or a book or a college or a veteran or a public servant.
When Mike looks to study God, he looks to God and to writers and speakers that inspire us to look to God in prayer.

A personal and prayerful relationship with the Father and a knowledge of history are a powerful combination. We love that about our pastor.

Reason #9: He calls himself a sheep dog

Mike knows the heart of the Father and the voice of the Shepherd.

He does not let his status as a brother get in the way of his calling to gather the sheep and keep them moving all in the direction of the Shepherd's choosing. His brotherly relationship with the sheep and the shepherd is a much stronger motivator than his bark or his bite.

He is rarely tired and possesses the capacity to sheep dog other sheep dogs in a similar manner as he sheep dogs the sheep.

Simplicity vs Symbolism

I’m having some curious thoughts about my faith that I don’t know how to sort out.

A couple weeks ago I went to visit Sacré Coeur with Ashlyn and my family. Inside the massive church building is a wealth of artwork on the walls: in the stained glass, in statues, painted on the domed ceiling. But as I looked at it, I saw symbols, symbols, and more symbols. A lot of the art seemed weird to me. Less like depictions of Bible stories and more like scenes from movies such as National Treasure, Indiana Jones, The Skulls, and The DaVinci Code. The stuff I saw reminded me a lot more of secret societies than of any kind of a relationship with our Creator and Savior. I mean, a kneeling Pope holding a globe up to a massive and well-dressed Jesus, while a dude holding his head in his hands nearby watches and boats are filled with people and keys and shields and birds and robes and hats. And then all over the place there’s keys keys and more keys in different positions and combinations...

A relationship with God is simple right? It has to be. That’s a cornerstone of my faith.

Jesus showed up and told us to stop with all the religious junk and instead listen to Him, accept His Spirit, and simply follow it. That’s all there is to it, right?

Then I open my Bible up and read Exodus 25, 26, and 40. It’s where God gives instructions to Moses regarding the building of the early temple, and the ark of the covenant, and its place within the temple. I realize that Jesus brought a new covenant which rendered the old one, well, old and outdated. But these instructions that God gave are incredibly intricate, and somewhat cryptic. Things like the type of wood, exact sizes, gold all over everything in specific places. Where to put rings and tables and bread and curtains. Who can go where and do what. How to decorate the table, the lampstand, and the dishes. Exactly which rooms they should go in and when and how. It just seems a little weird. And very not simple.

But then later, Jesus comes along and lives an impossible life, does impossible things, and suddenly some old cryptic symbolism starts to pop up. What happens to the curtain that blocks off the holy of holies room in the temple when Jesus dies on the cross? We’ve all heard that sermon before. It’s torn in two and opened up. This signifies that with the death of Jesus we can finally approach God directly. There need not be an intermediary. That’s good news! And a fabulous picture provided by the fact that for centuries, man had to stay separated from God by this room, this curtain, which He very vividly tore at a very opportune moment. But back to Exodus (and many more places in the OT), the instructions are incredibly meticulous. I have to ask myself, why did God insist that ”Three cups shaped like almond flowers with buds and blossoms are to be on one branch, three on the next branch, and the same for all six branches extending from the lampstand” (Ex 25:33)? A super-theologian could probably tell me. Or just a regular one who pays attention better than I in seminary class.

So here’s where I am: do I dive into all this symbolism, this stuff, this intricately woven story of epic proportions that God put down in the Old Testament, all of which points to the coming of Christ and all of which He reveals in His time to make sense (which is what I believe happened/happens, I can’t tell you with experiential confidence yet that every weird little thing God said in the OT has a future reason)? Do I jump in and consume myself with turning over every rock and figuring out every symbol? Or do I keep my life and my relationship with Him simple, “I listen, You lead, I follow”? Did God put all that stuff in there because He wants us to figure it all out? Or did He put it in there to wow us a little bit along the way?

I tend to fall back on a hiking analogy that raises a similar question. I love backpacking, hiking and exploring forests, gorges, mountains, and wilderness. The woods are so rugged, organic, and wild, aren’t they? Have you ever been deep into them, far removed from anything man-made, perhaps trudging along on trails wishing you could have a recliner with a cold drink and some pop-corn on hand, and then you look up and see something truly majestic? A vividly bright flower, a perfectly placed waterfall, an impossibly balanced boulder. Do you think sometimes that God puts stuff like that out there so that we’ll stumble upon it and say, “wow God, that’s just incredible”? Or do you think He puts it there and wants us to tear down the forest to find it? Of course, my wife reminds me, “if we’re not at least looking up, we may never see what God’s put out there.”

So what do you think? Do we keep it simple and focus on one thing (ps 27:4)? Do we wander along and stumble on God’s intricate puzzle pieces? Or do we do all we can to figure it all out, right now?

Reason #10: He has a little red ranger and he knows how to use it

In this month of Pastor Appreciation, Tatesbrook wishes to honor our beloved Mike Brady by sharing the top ten reasons that we love our pastor.

Many people have wondered what Jesus would drive. Tatesbrook knows that a pastor must live simply such that others may simply live and that little red rangers are mighty in the tearing down of strong sheds.

They are also useful in teaching and correction if you are in the passenger seat while Mike is driving. Most of the teaching comes in the demonstration of over correction when he is not paying attention to what is immediately in front of him while he talks to you, but it is still very useful in establishing a healthy fear of life threatening experiences.

In Mike's 18 years as our pastor, he has moved many members earthly possessions from house to house and centrifugal force has hurled many of those possessions back to the earth in pieces. He makes quick work of a move.

Affirming Spiritual Gifts

“I believe God made me for a purpose, but he also made me fast. And when I run I feel His pleasure.” -Eric Liddell, Chariots of Fire (1981)

How do you know your spiritual gifts? How do you really know?

Have you ever done one of those spiritual gift surveys? I’ve done quite a few. If you’re like me and have done more than one, you’re probably even more confused. This survey said I have the gift of administration and teaching! But wait, this survey says I have pastoring and prophecy. I just did another one that says I have the gift of praise and of service. I’m so confused!

There’s a fundamental problem with all of these surveys. No, there’s more than one problem... They’re made by man. They have to categorize gifts. They use different gifts in some than in others (do we use the list in 1 Cor 12, Rom 12, or Eph 4? The Pentecostal or Mainline groupings?). They assume the power of GOD in a person’s life can be discerned by a list of standardized questions.

Don’t hear me wrong, I’m not anti-spiritual-gift-questionnaire. But I think there’s a less flawed method. Or at the very least a qualifier of sorts. --> The body of Christ.

If you’ve ever had someone within the body come up to you and speak clearly and deeply into your life, and in so doing they recognize and affirm a particular gift in your life, take it to the bank. Just because a piece of paper that bases its belief on how you see yourself calls you a prophet, if nobody sees that gift in you, it’s probably not there.

So should we go around asking each other? I suppose you could. But I’d trust unsolicited advice more than putting someone on the spot to name something.

Instead, I’d promote sharing what God shows us regarding others more often, but with a word of caution. Don’t just become a happy encourager, telling everyone you see that they are God-gifted to do whatever you see them do. Watch, pray, confirm in your own heart with God, and then by all means go tell someone in the body you have a relationship with about the gift that you see in their life. Your affirmation may be incredibly freeing for that person. To be told I’m good at something I love, better yet gifted by God... wow, sign me up!

To Tell A Story

Do you ever read the book of Acts and get a little discouraged? I do.

Take for instance Stephen (Acts 7). Does that name ring a bell? Think alliteration. Stephen = Stoned. Not Woodstock, but big rocks. Pounding into his head. Over. And over. And over. Till he’s dead. Not a good way to go. But do you know what’s amazing about Stephen? Right before the rocks start flying, Stephen gives one of the most amazing, succinct accounts of the epic story of God all the way from Abraham up through the coming and death of Jesus Christ. And yet, it doesn’t read like a script that was memorized to be regurgitated, but a tailor-made and historically accurate story that perfectly fit his audience (Jewish leaders) and would have forced further thought into the minds of those listening.

I’m blown away every time I read the story of Stephen. But then this thought pops into my mind: I could never do that. I don’t have talent like that. Maaaybe I could memorize the story as Stephen told it. But could I re-tell it in such a way as to be understood by any particular audience? Could I take the story of God and show an african villager how it relates to his life? A post-modern painter? A dock-worker? An heiress to the royal throne? And then there’s the whole situation of Stephen’s circumstances... HE WAS ABOUT TO BE KILLED! Would I be thinking straight enough in that situation to tell the most important story ever told? Or would I be flashing my American passport and waiting for marines to swoop in and save me?

Here’s two more examples which come from Paul. In Acts 17, Paul’s in Athens. Athens is at this time a city known for its gods, idols, religiosity, philosophy. He sees statues and idols to gods everywhere. He’s Paul, so he has a reputation. He’s pressed by some people who don’t want him around, and he finds himself in the middle of a bruhaha. With everyone watching and listening he stands up and says ‘You know what I saw today? An idol to an unknown god. I’ll bet you Athenians would like to know this unknown god... (dramatic pause) I know him!’ And then he proceeds to tell them all about the power of the one true God and how it is desperately important they know Him. The other example comes later, when the Jews arrest Paul (Acts 22). He’s put on trial, and he takes the opportunity to tell his story: how God met him, grabbed him, changed him, and sent him. And like Stephen, he does it in such a way that the people around him hang on every word. Again, I’m flabbergasted at the lyrical and situational beauty of it all. But I could never do that.

Or could I?

Today I read a simple little verse in Luke: “When they bring you before the synagogues and the rulers and the authorities, do not worry about how or what you are to speak in your defense, or what you are to say; for the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say.” (12:11-12)

This verse is Jesus talking, and right before this He says that all who confess Him before others on this earth will be confessed to angels by He himself. Jesus knows my life. He knows the mess of it. He knows every little part and He knows better than anyone the total unworthiness of myself and my actions. And yet He will be the one in heaven who stands up and says ‘this man is worthy to be here, and let me tell you why...’ The angels will be waiting for only one answer to follow, ‘because he knows ME.’

And this same Jesus who proclaims us worthy also promises that when we’re in those tight spots before the multitudes, His spirit will give us every word we need. Listen to the spirit inside of you, His story is in there dying to get out.

Our Debt is Paid

The Church at Tatesbrook corporately knows

that we can not pay our own debt

Clearly, the tiny financial debt that was incurred on July 15, 1983 seems rather trivial to talk about compared to the Debt of sin for which we were forgiven, but it helps to remind us how long it takes for us to work our way out of a parable of the Debt.

The Church at Tatesbrook corporately thanks the people, ministries and banks that have helped us meet together week after week on the corner of Appian Way and Trent Blvd for over 25 years.

In the new testament, Jesus Christ describes to us the kingdom of God in many parables. A great number of those referred to money and management of resources because everyone could understand that.

Being "out of debt" financially as a church organization recognized by the state of Kentucky and the Southern Baptist Convention is not as big a deal as the principles that we have learned. God wants a relationship with us that is not distracted by debt. After all, that was Satan's original intent, to distract us from God.

In light of all this, here's what I want you to do. While I'm locked up here, a prisoner for the Master, I want you to get out there and walk-- better yet, RUN on the road God called you to travel. I don't want any of you sitting around on your hands. I don't want anyone strolling off, down some path that goes nowhere. And mark that you do this with humility and discipline-- not in fits and starts, but steadily, pouring yourselves out for each other in acts of love, alert at noticing differences and quick at mending fences.

You were all called to travel on the same road and in the same direction, so stay together, both outwardly and inwardly. You have one Master, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who rules over all, works through all, and is present in all. Everything you are and think and do is permeated with Oneness.

But that doesn't mean you should all look and speak and act the same. Out of the generousity of Christ, each of us is given his own gift.... He handed out gifts above and below, filled heaven with his gifts, filled earth with his gifts. He handed out gifts of apostle, prophet, evangelist, and pastor-teacher to train Christians in skilled servant work, working within Christ's body, the church, until we're all moving rhythmically and easily with each other, efficient and graceful in response to God's Son, fully mature adults, fully developed within and without, fully alive in Christ.

No prolonged infancies among us, please. We'll not tolerate babies in the woods, small children who are an easy mark for impostors. God wants us to grow up, to know the whole truth and tell it in love-- like Christ in everything. We take our lead from Christ, who is the source of everything we do. He keeps us in step with each other. His very breath and blood flow through us, nourishing us so that we will grow up healthy in God, robust in love.

Just a reminder for everyone that the class on the book of Mathew begins this Sunday (January 17) at 9:15 before church. We will meet downstairs in one of the classrooms. This study will last 5 weeks and it is a good idea for you to read the entire book of Mathew before we begin. The class will follow this basic schedule:
Week 1- the purpose of Mathew and the outline of Mathew
Week 2- Mathew's understanding of Jesus
Week 3- Mathew's understanding of the Kingdom of Heaven

Holy of Holies

1 Cor 3:16, 17b Do you not know that you are a temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?...the temple of God is holy and that is what you are.

I consider myself pretty normal. I am a normal height for my people group. I am around an average weight and have an average build. I don't really excel at anything. I am not a superstar but I am average at many things. I could be called an average Joe but I am not. Something sets me apart. Someone has put me head and shoulders above the rest and if you stand in the same Light as me you can claim the same truth. If you have ever struggled with being "normal" or "average," then here is some good news for you.

When Jesus was crucified, the veil in Herod's temple was torn from top to bottom (Matt 27:51). This veil separated the holy place from the holy of holies where the glory of the Lord was to reside (Ex 40:34, 2 Chron 5:13b-14) Only one person was allowed to enter that room and that person, the Levitical high priest, could only enter once a year on the day of atonement (Lev 16). This was a pretty special place for in it the sins of all the people were atoned for, for the year. When the veil was torn it revealed that the glory of the Lord no longer resided in the temple. He actually pressed the eject button about 600 years earlier when the Babylonians destroyed Solomon’s temple in 586 BC.

During His earthly ministry Jesus had become for us the Temple (John 2:19). In Him resided all the glory of the Lord (John 1:14) He was a very special person for on Him the sins of the world were placed (2 Cor 5:21) and in Him we have forgiveness of all our sins (Eph 1:7). After Jesus (the temple) was crucified, resurrected and ascended; the Lord chose a new temple....

You!

If you have accepted Christ as Savior, you are now the new temple of the Lord (2 Cor 6:16, 1 Cor 3:16-17)! In you resides all the glory of the Lord (1 Cor 3:17) and all of your sins, past present and future have been forgiven (Col 2:13-14). You have been consecrated, you are literally clean, and you are now permanently holy (1 Cor 3:17). The Greek word for temple in 1 Cor 3:17 is naos. This word, as opposed to heiron which refers to the outer court, makes reference to the inner temple. You are the naos of God. You are the new Holy of Holies of God! You are special beyond belief and shame on anyone who calls you normal! You are anything but normal. You are the Holy of Holies of God! Accept the truth, claim it and live it! Praise Him today!

So, my late nights of driving around Lexington for work have finally payed off in the form of.... ANOTHER BOB!!! That's right, I've found another Bob that knows the heart of God and teaches it. He has a talk radio show on 99.1 at 6:30 pm with a bunch of other Bob's called "People to People" and is the author of the unpopular book "Classic Christianity". Women's Retreat Final updates!

Hey ladies
We're almost there!!! I'm so excited about our upcoming women's retreat. Thanks to all who signed up and made the sacrifice of your time to join the body this weekend. And thanks to the daddy's who are going to be single dads for a couple nights. We are the body of Christ and the body needs all it's parts to work!

Here's the final scoop:
- Dinner will be Friday from 6:00 - 7:00 pm and will signify the official start of the retreat. We have divided everyone up into cars see below for that information and be sure to get with your driver for more details!
- The retreat will be over Sunday by 11:30am.
- You do not need to bring bedding or towels. They will be provided by the retreat center.
- You DO need to bring a snack to share (ie chips, apples, granola bars) AND some canned soda/bottled water to share as well. Our meals are top notch, but snacks and caffiene were hard to come by.

If you have any questions while you are packing and getting ready, please call Dacian at 881-5160!

SPICC American Samoa Update

Dear Church,

Thank you to all those who helped with school supplies for the SPICC school children who lost everything they had in the tsunami. Here is a message from our friend Debbie who is a teacher at the school:

"Words cannot express adequately our thanks to you for all the things that you've sent for the kids that have lost everything. We received your love gift today, and Moni & I went right to work; we packed a backpack per kid and evenly distributed the supplies and clothes so that when they come to school on Monday, we can just hand each one a backpack."

"We couldn't believe how much you sent. Your love for the Lord and our ministry here in Fatumafuti is moving ... I can barely put it together. Thank you so much!!! I'm sure Rev. Fa'atui & Mrs. Peta will want to write and thank you themselves, but I couldn't wait."

Just to keep everyone on the same page:

- Retreat begins at 6:15 Friday night with Dinner at the Agape Wilderness Retreat in Bedford Ky. Visit www.agapewilderness for info. Dinner will stop being served by 7 PM and we will begin our opening teaching session.

What you will need to bring:
- Your Bible, a pen/highlighter, prayer journal
- Toiletries (linens and bedding will be provided) and personal items
- Slippers and comfie retreat clothes (yes, Dacian will be in her pajamas the entire weekend!)
- A bag of chips, cookies, fruit, candy, or etc to share
- A 12 pack of soda/bottled water to share (Caffiene and snacks were hard to come by last year)
- Games (there will be a big chunk of time on Saturday for hiking, napping or playing games & some free time each night)

Remember, it would be helpful if you would pay what you intend to pay by the 18th (but we believe in grace). Also, I MUST get the camp a final number ASAP so you'll need to sign up by the 18th after church.

School Supplies - Aide for American Samoa

Dear Tatesbrook Family,

In 2000 I spent the summer working in American Samoa as a summer missionary. I worked with the Laolagi family who started the South Pacific International Christian Center, a Christian school for grades K-8. American Samoa has a deeply religious culture and a heavy Mormon influence. Through this school, young Samoan children are obtaining an advanced education and learning about relationship with Christ. I could go on and on about how God is working through this family to bring the LIGHT to a dark nation. However, as you know, there was a catastrophic earthquake and tsumani in Samoa and American Samoa this week.

I have been in touch with the Laolagi's and the school was spared any damage. That is a blessing. However, many of their students lived in villages around Pago Pago that were hit hard - some of these students have lost loved ones, all their earthly belongings, etc. I know this is short notice, but we would like to send some much needed help to SPICC in the form of school supplies that they can distribute to these children. This is a simple, inexpensive and practical way to share Christ for these children and their families.

If you would like to help, please bring in some school supplies on Sunday. Travis and I are leaving this week, so we need to get everything shipped out by Tuesday at the latest. I've requested a specific list from the Laolagi family of what supplies are needed, but I'm sure they would appreciate anything. There were about 30 students affected by the tsunami who are in the most need.

Working on Resting
Hebrews 4:3 For we who have believed enter that rest,

What is the enemy saying to you about rest? As we enter the week with Sabbath Rest on our minds, be aware of what the enemy is telling you about how to get there.

When I first heard about Sabbath Rest, I was amazed. I said “Yes, God. That is it! That is what I am looking for. That is where I want to be.” But then the enemy stepped in with the simple question “What do I need to do to get there?” It was a subtle lie and it made common sense that if rest was a “place,” I would need to get there somehow. I bought it hook, line and sinker and I basically told God to sit back and watch me go. Sabbath rest here I come!

A few weeks later, frustrated, sick of jumping hoops and tired from staying up later to get a few extra minutes of Bible study; I stopped. I literally sat down and said “God, I don’t understand. What is this rest?” His simple truth that freed me from the darkness, “Why would I make you work to rest?” I laughed out loud when I realized the irony of trying my hardest to enter rest. The very nature of rest is ceasing our own works (Heb 4:10). It was a classic Galatians 3 scenario. What I had started in the Spirit I was trying to perfect in the flesh.

As God gives us opportunity this week to live in rest, please do not let the enemy set you on the wrong road. Don’t buy the lie that you need to work to get there. Rather, proclaim the truth of Hebrews 4:3, “for those of us who have believed enter that rest.” Be “diligent,” not in action but in attitude, belief, and zealousness that you are already there. Sabbath rest remains not for us to find but for us to realize that we are in (Eph 1:3, 2 Pet 1:3). It remains for us to live and experience. It remains for Galatians 2:20 to be walked out, where we no longer live but we let Christ live through us. That is Sabbath Rest.

Men's Retreat 2009

We have reserved Wesley Woods from Friday afternoon until Sunday at noon again this year. Please come join us for a great weekend of fellowship, teaching and relaxation.

The weather looks like highs of 75 and lows of 60 so dress for fall. The teens may still dump each other in the lake, but I doubt that any of the adults will be trying to cool off.

Here is what you will need for the trip:

Pillow, Sleeping bag ( There are a few flat areas of ground for tents if you would like, but there are plenty of bunk beds in the lodge )
Bible, Notebook, Pens
Snacks
Low energy games ( cornhole, ladder, bocce ball, cards )
Soap, Shampoo, Tooth Brush, other personal items ( Showers are available at the camp )

Prayer request from DonnaMarie

Hello church body! I just got off the phone with DonnaMarie and she has requested our prayers!
She has been having foot pain for over 4 years and it has been misdiagnosed as arthritis. Finally, a doctor has discovered that she has a flat foot disorder. He has prescribed her to be in a large boot cast one foot at a time until they can get the problem fixed. This means at least 1 year (6 months on each foot) and he has put her on bed rest. yes, this means for an entire year she has to stay off her feet at almost all times.She goes to the doctor Monday where he is going to check on her cast. Here’s is what she is requesting prayer for:
- Perseverance. She is stir -crazy not being able to do things for herself. She is tired of not being self-sufficient. She wants to be able to do her job instead of other people having to do it for her. Pray for grace to accept the help and the ability to gracefully be still.
- The pain has been exhausting for her. She has pain medicine but if she takes it, it prevents her from being able to drive. So she has to wait until she gets home from work. Then it wipes her out for the evening. Pray for her to find a way to make it through the pain.
DonnaMarie hasn’t been able to come to church. She can’t make it up the stairs and there is no hang railing on the ramp going up the front part of the church. I have told her to call me when she gets there and I will find 2 strapping young (or not so young) lads who can help her get into the church. So be prepared to help her Sunday AMs so she can come back to joining us in corporate worship on Sunday mornings. Also, as the Lord leads, contact DonnaMarie and see how you can help her! Even the little things can’t get done when you can’t get out and about!

"Of Whom the World is Not Worthy"

Luke 7:28 "I say to you, among those born of a woman there is no one greater than John [the Baptist]; yet he who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he."

How important are you really? On a scale of 1 to 10 how great are you in the economy of God? Feel like a Zero? Maybe a 5 at best? Just don't know? Let's take a look at scripture to find out just how great Christ has made us.

Hebrews chapter 11 gives us a list of some pretty incredible people. Men of faith, women of God, individuals that you really look forward to meeting in heaven. These were individuals who through faith conquered kingdoms, performed acts of righteousness, obtained promises, shut the mouth of lions, quenched the power of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, from weakness were made strong, became mighty in war and put armies to flight. They endured mockings, scourgings, chains and imprisonment. They were stoned, beaten, and sawn in two. These were individuals of whom the world was not worthy (Heb 11:33-38). Even though they were a part of mighty acts and incredible miracles none of their actions gave them a right standing with God. All of them gained approval through faith alone (Heb 11:39), and only by the faith in Him who justifies the ungodly were they credited as righteous (Rom 4:5).

Considering all of them, and every single person ever born of a woman, Jesus said none of them were greater than John the Baptist (Luke7:28). None of those mentioned in Hebrews 11 or anyone else born of a woman from all history past surpassed John. That was a pretty big statement coming from Jesus. John was the man! Granted He did not say they were less. He only said that they were not greater. However, the most amazing part of the statement came next. Jesus continued to say, "yet he who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he (Luke 7:28)." Whoa...

That's you! He is talking about you. When you accepted Christ, He rescued you from the domain of darkness and transferred you to the kingdom of God (Col 1:13). Christ says that you are greater than John the Baptist! Wow. Even more amazing, Christ says that you are greater than Abraham! Whoa... Did you realize that in God's economy, the only reality, that you were greater than King David? Whoa... Greater than Moses! Wow! Solomon, Sarah, Samuel, Samson, Daniel, people whom the world was not worthy of, Christ says you are greater!

It does not seem right but it is true. They all were born only of a woman but we are born of the Spirit (John 3:5). We can and do experience daily, things about which they only dreamed. We have a peace with the Creator for which they longed (Rom 5:1). We are permanently indwelled by the Spirit of God giving us a closeness and intimacy that they never even imagined was possible! Let us not take for granted what so many died looking forward to. You are great because Christ has made you great. Let the truth dictate your feelings, know who you are in Christ, live life abundantly and praise Him!

2009 Women's Retreat @ Agape Wilderness Retreat

I have some details about the women's retreat. Due to the higher cost of our luxorious women's retreat (compared the the stinky men's retreat), I wanted to give you ample time to begin setting aside some moula for the event.

Mark out Friday October 23rd through Sunday October 25th.
I will work on getting departure and arrival times to you as we get closer.

2 nights at the retreat center with teaching & fellowship including all your meals = $130
A 60 hour get away with no screaming children, dishes to clean, meals to make, shelves to dust, laundry to fold, work to do or lawns to mow = PRICELESS!!!

- For the Lord to rise up leaders for teaching, worship and serendipity activities.
- For the Lord to sanctify our time together and call us according to His purposes.

Missional Living

Everything in me wants persuade you to remain vigilant in your decision to pursue Christ's plan for our community, to maintain the relationships with the children God developed during VBS, and to see Christ victorious through prayer, but I won't. Instead, I will remind you of what true missional living is: pursuing Christ with all your being. Many members of our family have forgotten the true mission of our lives and replaced it with what should be it's fruit.

The common understanding of missional living is that of a missionary lifestyle; adopting the posture, thinking, behaviors, and practices of a missionary in order to engage others with the gospel message. While this is good it's not what's best. The most effective missionaries in God's arsenal have ALWAYS been people deeply committed to knowing Him and seeing His plan fulfilled. You can't achieve one without the other. You can try your dead level best to "win" the world for Christ, but what good is it if you're walking in two different directions!

Walking on water is great until your focus becomes that action, because that's when the power is lost. The goal wasn't to walk on water, but to be with Christ. Focus on Christ and you'll have your jaunt upon the water. There is great power in being engaged with Jesus, so walk where He leads and overcome all obstacles; that's being missional.

Our goal for Tuesday was to double the number of VBS kids from Monday. I think there were 50% more. If we can get 50% more again tonight and Thursday and Friday we will have a God sized problem to deal with.

Pictures are great for the website, but the lessons that they shared were largely about relationships and what is important.

One traveler confessed apathy in the great commission and great commandment.
One traveler recognized that they were on a daily tread mill.
One traveler realized that life is short and out of our control.

We all are very blessed to know these three travelers. I am eager to hear from the other three.

The Truth About the Gospel

Have you ever heard something that had that ring of truth to it? Whatever it was that was said simply cut straight to the core of the matter and exposed it for what it really was. I’ve been hearing quite a bit of that recently about the gospel of Christ. So, with respect to decades of the traditional ways of presenting the gospel, I think there is a more accurate way to tell it.I have heard over and over again the gospel presented like this: 1) God made us because God is love. 2) We rebelled against God. 3) Jesus came and died on a cross so we would have a way back to God. 4) Now all we have to do is believe and we can be with God. I have problems with 3 and 4 because I have far too often heard them presented in such a way that it sounds like a deal is being made and if I accept it than the reward I get is an eternal life in heaven. This is horribly and utterly wrong. The truth is this: God didn’t make a way back to Him so that we could get to heaven, God made a way back to Him because He wants us back. Do you see the difference? The first implies that God would be just fine in heaven with or without you and the provision of the cross and resurrection of Jesus is entirely for your benefit for you to accept or reject as you see fit. Accept it, and you get to go to heaven. Reject it and you get to go to hell. But that isn’t why Jesus suffered and died on the cross. God wanted us back! Like a loving mother who will stop at nothing to get her child back God Himself endured the agonies of our punishment so that He could have us back. It isn’t about our comfort, it’s about His love. There’s only one reason to accept the truth of Jesus’ cross and resurrection and commit your life to Him, because He deserves those for whom He died. I’m getting so sick of hearing the gospel presented like it was commonplace, like it was some ordinary event between a buyer and a seller, “Do you want this deal or not?” IT ISN’T ABOUT US! There’s no deal here! There’s no contract! There’s no give and take! The only thing that is going on here is a loving and holy God had his own creation rebel against Him. Because He’s holy, our rebellion had to be punished; but because He is love, He didn’t want to just give up on us. So, rather than starting over and giving His love to someone else, He suffered the punishment for our rebellion so that He could continue to give His love to us. The only proper response to such an act is to humbly submit your entire life to Him because He is worthy; and He is worthy because He is God.I’ll retell the story of the Moravians as was told by Paris Reidhead in his sermon “Ten Shekels and a Shirt.” In the early 1800s two young Moravians heard about a slave owner who lived on his own little island in the Atlantic. He owned over 2000 slaves and vowed never to have a preacher come to his island because he didn’t want to hear about God, he was through with all that nonsense. The two Moravians therefore sold themselves in to slavery and then used that money to buy tickets to get to that island so they could share the love of God with those slaves and perhaps with the slave owner. The families of those men stood on the dock weeping and wondering if it was the right thing to do because they knew they would never see them again. As the boat was sailing away one of the men was heard to yell across the water, “May the Lamb that was slain receive the reward of His suffering!”This is the only reason for living. If we could just get it through our thick heads that the truth of what is happening all around us is not about eating and drinking, nor is it about what clothes to wear, nor about how many possessions we can own or how much money we can make- all of that is nonsense and will come and go. The truth is that all of us, the entire human race, has spat in the face of a holy and righteous God and we deserve to go to hell because of it. However; because He loves us more deeply than we could ever dream, He would rather go to hell on our behalf just so He could have us back. So, don’t ever tell me again the gospel is about me getting a free ticket to heaven or giving me access to the golden streets where all things are happy. If I have a role to play in this gospel it is only this: to sit and rest while He lavishly pours out His love all over me.
